Updated: Dec 12, 2019

My ten business commandments blog YE Associates

Here are my ten business commandments you CANNOT afford to ignore to build a strong, viable and thriving small business. Invest the time and effort in every one of these commandment steps - if it is worth doing - it' worth doing well!

1. Know it all!

You must know the following like you know the back of your hand – because even if you sell a retail product, small business owners must BE their product.

  • Know your product

  • know your competition

  • know your target market(s)

2. Be recognizable!

Every one of the following points can develop naturally from the product or service you provide or each of these points may develop with a lot of work over time and many tears.

  • Create your business name

  • Create your logo

  • Create your tagline

  • Create your color pallet

3. Create your messaging!

  • Tell your story

  • Understand your strengths and what separates you from everyone else in your little business corner of the world

4. Get your business looking like a business!

  • Get a domain for your website

  • Print business cards with all your business details

  • Create an email business signature

5. Give birth to a website!

  • Know how you want your website to look and feel

  • Develop a sitemap

  • Develop a Homepage and an inner page design plan

  • Write your first round of content

  • Get the best images to enhance your site

  • Design and publish your site

6. Setup your Social Media presence!

  • Open a Facebook account and join Facebook groups

  • Open a LinkedIn account (if you are a B2B business) and join LinkedIn groups

  • Open Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter accounts depending on your business and open boards, get followers and follow others

  • Join online forums

7. Don’t be the best kept secret in Israel!

  • Start posting to social media with your reused website content and sharing your content

  • Tell friends, colleagues and clients you are on social media and ask them to support you

  • Join a small business networking group and talk to everyone

8. Create valuable content!

  • Write blogs

  • Write social media posting content

  • Reuse and re-purpose your content

9. Set up a database of clients and potential clients!

  • Get to know your clients and keep in touch on a regular basis

10. Market your business forward!

  • Create a posting schedule for all online social media and traditional media

  • Post your heart out on a regular basis

  • Keep business cards in your pocket - at all times - and give them out to everyone

  • Never stop marketing and telling people about your business

There are no short cuts or secret pills to success, just a dogged determination and the drive that you have something valuable to sell to people who need you - desperately!
