It's days away from Rosh Hashana and it's time to take the Inspiration Pledge to rev-up your small business! Work these 7 steps - one-at-a-time - to inspire you and move your business F-O-R-W-A-R-D today!
Step 1: This year start your ‘10,000 hour journey to expertise’!
We've all heard of the '10,000 hours of work needed to become an expert' concept. The concept applies to just about any field of endeavor. What may be less understood is that this is a focused effort in a focused area, not 10,000 hours of general work. Take a look at your business and ask yourself where do you feel you are lacking knowledge and/or need improvement. Be specific and be focused. Consider areas both within your area of expertise and in the business of doing business. Concentrate on only one or two areas and make this your year of 10,000 hours! Step 2: This year get organized!
Go back to one of the the simplest and most proven methods of better organization: create a TO DO list every evening, at the end of your work day. List the tasks you need to complete, the tasks you need to begin and perhaps a few actions items you ‘would love to do’. At the start of the next work day begin by reviewing this To Do list and prioritizing your list and then get moving one-action-item-at-a-time! Step 3: Get inspiration!
Get inspiration from outside your business area of expertise. This is the year to read and expand your horizons. Find a book club and meet with people you would not necessarily come in contact with or find an online book club. Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club is always a great bet. . Set yourself a goal to read at least one new book a month! Step 4: Tame the technology beast!
This is the year you're going to take control of technology and stop considering yourself a technophobe! Take a course or workshop on managing your social media, learning a graphics program like Photoshop or simply learn to create a simple and free website for your business using Wix. This is the year you will take control of your mouse! Step 5: Be kind to yourself!
This year set aside time - on a regular basis - to meet old friends that have nothing to do with your business. Take up a hobby, such as photography, painting, salsa dancing or yoga; be kind to yourself and look for ways to fulfill yourself creatively! Your mind, your body and your spirit will thank you! Step 6: Take control of your finances!
This year take an active role in your finances. Start with any aspect of your business from understanding how to calculate a budget and your cash flow to setting a goal of billable hours or understanding your bank statements. It's time to take control of your finances and make your business work for you! Step 7: Clear out the cobwebs and shake things up!
This year take stock of your business. Evaluate which services and products sold and which didn’t, what made money and what didn’t. Get rid of any service, product or person that does not bring you and your business joy!
It’s a new year – make this the year of YOUR small business!
